Burwain Sailing Club membership

Thinking of joining us?

We think that sailing is a great sport and once you have learnt the basics, you’ll soon be hooked which makes joining the club great value for money.

We do our best to keep the costs for new members to a minimum by offering low rates for learn-to-sail events, which we set at just enough to cover costs and to deter no-shows on training days, free use of club boats for beginners and we keep a supply of donated sailing gear which if it fits new members can take free of charge. In addition, reduced rates are available for new members joining part way through the season (from June onwards). For more information please contact our membership secretary at membership.burwain@gmail.com.

Nevertheless, we recognise that membership is a significant outlay, but this reflects the costs which amongst other things include our lease on the lake, rent on the site of the dinghy park, building and grounds maintenance, heating, fuel, cleaning costs, insurance and the cost of maintaining of a fleet of club dinghys and safety boats.

Try before you buy

If you are not sure if sailing is for you then we can arrange a short taster session during one of our Saturday sailing sessions. Please ask our membership secretary who can help you arrange this.

Member information

Keep in touch with our WhatsApp Group

We have a busy Burwain SC WhatsApp group with everything and anything to do with the club, so all  members should ask our membership secretary at membership.burwain@gmail.com to be added to the group.

New member induction

Regardless of what category of membership you take out there are certain things which all new members need to know, so please arrange with our membership secretary for a committee member to welcome you to the club and show you around. The brief induction includes important safety and security information as well as being a personal way of welcoming you to the club.

Club keys

The club is secured by multi-lock keys which unlock our gates and access into the clubhouse. Club keys are available for a £25 returnable deposit and these give you access to the facilities outside our programme of activities.

Volunteering

We have no staff apart from a part-time cleaner, so in order to keep costs of membership low all members are required to make themselves available from time to time to contribute to voluntary activities which are essential to running the club. If you have any specialist skills which you think may help, then please let us know. Organised work parties will be publicised to members on the WhatsApp group. For experienced sailing members their volunteer activities will involve race officer duties (often referred to as OD duties from the outdated term “Officer of the Day”). Newer members will be encouraged to assist with race officer duties.

Club Committee

The club is organised with a committee structure with the traditional roles found in most sailing clubs including Commodore (chairman), Vice Commodore (chairman in waiting), Sailing Captain, Treasurer, Membership Secretary, Bosun (safety boat maintenance). The future of the club relies on members willing to be part of the committee and contributing their skills and a small amount of time into the smooth running of the club. All members are welcome to attend committee meetings, details of committee meetings will be advertised on the WhatsApp group. At the AGM each November we vote on the committee for the year ahead. We ask all members to give careful consideration to putting themselves forward for one of the many roles.
